JACK KETCHESON
Jack was born and raised on the family farm in Sidney Township, and attended the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph where he obtained his B.S.A. degree.
He obtained his M.Sc. and his Doctor of Philosophy degrees at the University of Illinois.
Jack served on the Soil Science faculty at the University of Guelph as a professor in Soil-Plant Relations until his retirement in 1983. He was granted leave in 1967 for sabbatical in Austria in 1967 and assisted in research in Kenya in 1974.
During his research and teaching activities Jack published 31 papers and made many presentations at conferences on soil fertility, erosion, tillage and conservation.
Jack has been involved in The Society of the Sigma Xi, Agricultural Institute of Canada, Ontario Institute of Agrologists, Ontario and Hastings Federations of Agriculture, Christian Farmers Federation of Agriculture, American Society of Agronomy, Soil and Water Conservation Society, International Soil Tillage Research Organization and the Ontario Asparagus Growers’ Marketing Board.
Since his retirement from Guelph in 1983, Jack and his wife Betty have operated an asparagus farm and he has maintained a strong interest in local municipal affairs and is committed to supporting and preserving the agricultural industry.
Jack has supported the Hastings County Museum, served as a Director of the Hastings County Federation of Agriculture, and is presently Chair of the Eastern Ontario Asparagus Growers’ Marketing Board.
