PHIL FLAGLER
Born in Peterborough, Phil grew up in Belleville attending Avondale Public School and Belleville Collegiate Institute. Early work experience included the Swift Canadian Co. in Belleville at its Belleville plant. In 1942, Phil joined the Royal Canadian Navy seeing minesweeper duty on the North Atlantic and overseas on a frigate. Upon discharge he enrolled in the Lorne Greene Academy of Radio Arts in Toronto. Following graduation he joined Radio Station CJBQ and in 1948 was appointed Farm Program Director, a position he held until retirement in 1990, which may be a record in this capacity. Phil worked with leading farmers as a link from the basic producer to our urban friends while enhancing relations between farmers, government extension people and agricultural representatives.
Over the years, Phil interviewed every Provincial Minister ofAgriculture from 1949 to the 80's, covered major organizations and spoke to many groups including the Dairy Farmers of Canada at their annual convention in Winnipeg. He conducted hundreds of personal interviews on the farm, at farm shows, Soil and Crop meetings, plowing matches, fall fairs, 4-H clubs and Women's Institute meetings. Belleville Sales and Advertising Club (President 1960-1961), Belleville Agricultural Society, and the Royal Canadian Legion were a part of his community involvement with awards from the Central Canada Broadcasters and Canadian Association of Broadcasters, along with recognition for the creation of "Dairy Days" and "A Day On The Farm".
