JIM TUNNEY
Jim is a fourth generation farmer from Shelter Valley, who took over the family mixed farm ,after working for a local dairy farmer at the young age of 14 years.
Mr.Tunney eventually purchased this 400 acre farm west of Wicklow, and bought a herd of 70 Guernsey cattle in l963 after managing a Cobourg hardware store for a number of years. Jim served on the Ontario Milk Marketing Board for 12 years, and was a member of the Federation of Agriculture. He was a prominent Guernsey breeder, hosted the Guernsey Classic Sale, the top Canadian Guernsey sale. Jim bas been a tremendous proponent for agriculture, despite other careers and employment opportunities he always returned to his deepest passion which was farming. He served his community at large through his church, the school system and was a trustee of the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Newcastle Separate School Beard for 16 years.
Jim acted as a claims adjuster in Eastern Ontario following the1998 Ice storm. In 1998 Jim hosted the Northumberland County Plowing Match.
Jim was appointed to the Canadian Senate, by the then Prime Minister Jean Chretien in 2000. He visited the Ukraine and Russla as well as Yugoslavia working with pork, beef and dairy farmers to improve production and to assist farmers.
