John was born in Norfolk County and began working in the flue-cured tobacco industry in 1929. After operating a successful tobacco farm in Brant County he started the first tobacco farm in Northumberland county in Haldimand Township.
John operated a second flue cured tobacco farm in Cramahe Township. John was a Haldimand Township School Board Trustee and also a School Board Trustee in Cramahe Township in the 1960’s.
John, also known as Jack, was a lifetime member of the Northumberland-Durham Flue Cured Tobacco Growers Association.
John was a member of the Cobourg Masonic Lodge.
The tobacco industry existed for over 50 years in Northumumberland County. In 1950 there were
over 150 farms growing tobacco, but by 1997 there were none left in the County, although it had been an integral
part of the Northumberland 's agricultural scene. John retired in 1970.
