HON. W. A. “BILL” GOODFELLOW
1901 -1983
Bill Goodfellow farmed on the 8th Concession of Brighton township. He was elected to Brighton Township council in 1922, served as a councillor, deputy reeve and reeve, and was a member of Northumberland County Council.
Bill was a pioneer in the county in the use of artificial insemination, pasture management and was one of the first farmers in the county to own a combine.
Mr. Good fellow was a member of the Northumberland Federation of Agriculture and vice president when he resigned to seek election as MPP for Northumberland a position he held from 1943-1963.
While M.L.A. for Northumberland, he was Ontario Minister of Welfare (1946-1955) Minister of Municipal Affairs (1955-1956) Minister of Agriculture (1956-1961) and Minister of Highways (1961-1963)
As Minister of Agriculture, he was responsible for a major shift in the Farm Products Marketing Act which strengthen the power of marketing boards. Bill exhibited qualities of reliability, a sense of fairness and of sound judgement and he stayed true to his agricultural roots.
