F. J. (FRED) WEBSTER, BSA
1897 - 1956
Fred graduated from the Ontario Agricultural College in 1922. In 1934 he was appointed Agricultural Represetative in Prince Edward County and for 20 years until his forced retirementin 1954 due to ill health, promoted modern farming techniques. At the same time he had his own farm and raised award winning Holstein cattle.
A great promoter of the canning industry, he helped Prince Edward become the vegetable canning centre of Canada at that time. He was the driving force in getting the Prince Edward Fruit Growers Co-op and the local Farm Supply Co-op started.
Fred especially enjoyed working with young people. He coached many successful Junior Farmer Judging teams and led “the boys’ and girls’ clubs” which were the forerunners of 4-H Canada. The F. J. Webster Memorial Trophy for Champion Livestock Showman is one of the most sought after 4H awards in Prince Edward County.
Fred Webster’s legacy of working with young farmers lives on. Past and present, 4H leaders, municipal leaders, farm organization leaders, renowned scientists, etc. can be traced back to the teaching and the leadership of Fred Webster.
